Founded in 1886,
Clonliffe Harriers is Ireland's oldest Athletics Club, with a long history
of success - see our
'Hall of Fame'
and our
'Club Records'
and our
'Current Track Performances' pages. The club caters for Juveniles, Juniors,
Seniors, Veterans, Joggers; men and women in Track &
Field, Road and Cross-Country.
The club has a long list of successful
national & international stars as well as a wealth of
new and up-coming talent. The
Club is affiliated to the
Athletics Association of Ireland and the
Dublin Athletics Board.
We have top-class international coaches in all
disciplines and a lively training programme for all levels.
The club competes during the winter in cross country and road
events. This involves all ages from under 10 to senior, veterans
and all standards. The indoor season begins in January and
we have excellent competitors in sprinting and jumping with
the outdoor Track & Field season from April to September and
Cross-Country throughout the winter.
We have active
groups in pretty much every level. In a
nutshell, we have a very lively Junior
section from under-10 to under-13 who are
looked after by excellent coaches Pamela
Cooper and Mick Fogarty and are captained by
Gladys Cooper. Our 13-16 age group is also
very busy. They also have an excellent coach in
Ronan Mulvaney. Our Junior Women (Under-21)
section is expanding. Our Senior Women
and Lady Veterans (over-35 for women)
section is Captained and coached by Mags
Greenan. Our Junior Men and Women group is
coached by Joe Cooper with our Senior Men
coached by Peter McDermot and Killian
Lonergan. We also have a very active
sprint/track group, again over a range of
ages and abilities. They meet separately and
have their own coaches etc.
- including the
Coaching
Director of the
Irish Schools'
Athletic
Association and
a Level 3 coach
specialising in
Sprints, Hurdles
and Jumps, John Shields. Our
very successful Masters Mens group meet at
the same times as below but often train at
Malahide Castle.

The Club is involved in
Cross-country, road and track events (indoor
included) at every level both domestic and
international. We have a busy schedule of
fixtures year-round both though inter-club
competition and our own events. We
have our own road race (the oldest race in
Ireland), The Clonliffe 2-mile in April. At
club level we have our Grand-Prix series,
which is aimed at providing a competition
for every level of senior/master competitor,
through a handicap system over a range of
fourteen events with varying distances
including road, cross-country and track.

For the evening
training sessions we meet at the clubhouse
which is in the grounds of Santry Stadium
just inside the gates nearest Swords, while
on Saturday and Sunday Mornings, we meet at
the Stadium Dressing rooms, under the main
stand, which is at the end of the drive from
the main gate (the gate nearest town).
Anyone interested in joining can
contact us by email
or phone or by post to the address
below. The training is arranged by the
coaches suitable for each group's ability,
consists of various track sessions, running
on grass or easy jogs in the nearby park. There's no obligation - if
you'd like to come along to see what we do,
feel free. Why not take part?
If you want to come up to one of the
training sessions, be there a few
minutes before the start and you can talk to
one of the coaches. If you want to take part
in the session, bring along some basic
running gear with long-sleeved & legged gear
if it is cold, a change of gear and whatever
for a shower etc. The coaches can advise you
in the clothing/shoes department if you
don't have it already. There is a
map & directions to the stadium on the website. The club also has
an active social life. At the
junior end we have discos and even the
training is very mixed with football,
rounders and chasing games being part of the
'craic'. Club members and associate members
of the club have the use of the
'Harry Cooney' room - our lounge - which is
open at the evenings and weekends.
Apart from a quiet drink and a chat, there
are Music Nights and other events.
There is parking available at the
clubhouse.
