The 4 Mile Race
in Malahide Castle, sponsored by
Tom Flood, was run over a very
open grass course in front of
the castle itself. The
one mile circuit was:
starting from the field beside
the car park, along by the
avenue across in front of the
castle, along by the trees up
the hill, through the gate and
right around the bottom of the
field where we started up to
the finish, all this four
times. Conditions were perfect
as it was a beautiful evening
with no wind or rain and the
grass was like a carpet. The arrangement was an
Closed-Handicap with runners
going off together shortly
after eight o'clock. Everybody
had their own race to run, but
for a while there was a main
bunch at the front that held
together, initially consisting
of Martin Treacy, Tommy
Griffin, Gerry McCabe, Brian
Rankin, Dave Brennan, Nathan
Pearce, Dylan Ahern, Colm Doran
and Aidan Creaner. After
two laps the bunch was down to
six with Aidan and Colm placed
next drifting away from the
leaders and Dylan behind.
On the third lap Dave Brennan
peeled away from the group and
struck out a lead that was
never threatened.
The group then broke up as each
member pushed hard to the
finish. Each athlete in the race
had their own challenges and
there were a few places
changing hands right to the
finish contributing to an
exciting race where some
excellent times were recorded.
Dave Brennan
recorded the best time of all
with 21:55 with Martin
Treacy (guest)
second fastest in 22:09 and
Brian Rankin third in
22:19, third of the Grand Prix
competitors was fourth-placed
Tom Griffin in 22:28. See the

In the Grand-Prix Competition,
the Handicap went to Declan
Hetherington (20pts) with
Jim Cleary second (19pts)
and
Michael McFadden third
(18pts). Our thanks to
Tom Flood for
sponsoring the race again and
to the organisers/officials/photographers
who helped out on the night. The bonus
points for fastest actual
times went to Dave Brennan (5),
Brian Rankin (3)
and Tom Griffin (1) - Martin
was guesting and is not in the
Grand-Prix.
Is Dylan's lead unassailable
at the top of the leader
board? He will wear the
yellow jersey yet again in the
next race, the 800m Track
Race on the 26th June.
See you there. |
