Review 2003 Grand-Prix Series - The 2.5 Mile McCarrick race
Venue Malahide Castle
Date Thursday 29th, May  2003
The 2.5 Mile McCarrick Race in Malahide Castle made for an interesting evenings' racing.   The arrangement was an Open-Handicap with runners going off at different times as allocated by the handicappers.   This proved to be quite interesting and exciting as the route taken (around the perimeter forest pathway of the castle) meant that people couldn't see far ahead (or behind) to the other runners.  As it happens, in at least one case, it also meant that people got lost -  (me) I'll bring a map and compass next time!  We had an excellent turnout (30 runners) and the evening itself was fine for the run with some very good times being recorded.   Eugene Coppinger recorded the best time of all with 12:53 with Tom Griffin second fastest in 13:02 and J. McHugh third in 13:33.   Congratulations also to guest Conor Healy on an excellent time of 13:35 (5th fastest).
In the Grand-Prix Competition, the Handicap went to Eddie Bishop (20pts) with Seán Pender (19pts) second and Noel Guiden third (18pts) - Noel takes Conor Healy's third place as Conor is not in the Grand Prix Series.  Our thanks to Eugene McCarrick for sponsoring the race again and to the organisers/officials who helped out on the night.   The bonus points for fastest actual times went to Eugene Coppinger (5), Tom Griffin (3) and J. McHugh (1).   Is Dylan's lead unassailable at the top of the leader board?  He will wear the yellow jersey yet again in the next race, the 4 Mile Grass Race (sponsored by Tom Flood) on the 12th June.   See you there - I'd better go and practice or get a map as this same route will be used for the Mick Murphy 5 Mile (now moved to July)!
