The May-Day Mile this year was
hotly contested with some very
exciting competitions for
places and times. The
weather (thankfully) stayed
fine enough and though it
threatened rain, the conditions
and light was just about
perfect for the job. The A
race included some
non-Grand-Prix competitors as
well as the faster members of
the group in the GP
competition. Danny Collins came
home first in 4:49 and Eoin
Cleary second in 5:00 both
showing excellent form and good
pacing. The first of the
GP competitors, Brian Rankin came home
third with an excellent 5:01.
The B race was very exciting
with the lead changing hands
among Colm Doran, Dylan Ahern,
Dave Brennan and Nathan Pearce,
who was the eventual winner in 5:03.
Aidan Creaner came through on
the back straight for second in
5:06 with Colm Doran finishing
strongly in
third with 5:09. Finally, the
C race
proved to be the most exciting
with several ties for places
being resolved over the last
100 metres. First home, showing
great
speed was Jim Bennet in
5:44, second was Ed Bishop in
5:45 and third was Alan
Smeaton with
5:46.
The handicapping as
always, was done by Noel Guiden
and Pat Bonass, both also
acting as officials for the
race. Jim Cleary sorted
and published the results - many thanks to
Colm Doran for sponsoring the
race. The prize-giving
came next followed by quite a
bit of analysis of the results
and general discussion of the
series over a couple of Ballygowans in the bar
afterwards. Congratulations
and well done everybody.

The Grand-Prix Competition
is 'hotting up' as they say,
with Ken O'Gorman scoring
first place in the handicap
on 20 points, with Dave
Brennan second with 19 points
and Ray McConville sharing third with
Tony Westby - both getting 17.5
points. Dylan retains his
position on top of the leader
board and will wear the yellow
jersey in The Great Weight
Race – (3000M) 15th May.
This novel event uses weight,
height and age as part of the
handicapping! See you
there.
The bonuses for fastest actual times
(Grand-Prix competitors) went to
Brian Rankin with 5:01 (5 Points),
second Nathan Pearce with 5:03 (3 points) and
third Aidan Creaner with 5:06 (1 point). |
