Date
Sunday

The participants
in the SENIOR & JUNIOR
Championships, held in the superb
grounds of Avondale House,
could not have asked for
better weather in this years
competition. The
course itself was tough with a
difficult hill up through the
trees.

Our Senior
Men's team
did brilliantly to come home
Team Second narrowly missing
out on first place by 3 points
behind Dundrum South Dublin
A.C. The team
were: Cian McLoughlin leading
them home in 4th place, Rory
Byrne in 9th, Nigel Brunton in
12th and Paolo Doglio was
18th. Others racing were Colin
Coyne 43rd and William
Stafford 49th. Cian, Rory and
Nigel all went with the
leading pack and Cian was
chasing 3rd for much of the
race. Bravely chasing down the
runners ahead he successfully
entered the medal position a
half mile from home only to
succumb to the sprint finish
of DSD's Noel Berkely in the
final 100m to finish 4th. Rory
ran bravely on his own for
much of the race to garner his
highest ever finish at the
National event. Nigel
struggled somewhat for a few
laps but kept his head and
sprinted past two runners over
the final 400m to finish 12th
and keep the team competition
tight. Paulo, running only his
2nd race in 20 months started
very very slow - but picked
runners off on each lap as he
moved through the field to
cross the line in 18th. A
great team effort, but one
that must go down as having
slipped away! DSD went on
to take Team First for each of
the four categories, so
congratulations also to them
on a fabulous result.
Leevale A.C. also did well in
the Mens' Senior with First
and Second place going to
Martin McCarthy and
Cathal Lombard.
Women's club captain Mags
Grennan ran a sterling race
for 15th in the Senior Women's
race. Mags was always running
strongly and seemed to be the
sole racer unfazed by the
steep hill! Ann Keenan-Buckley won the
race impressively, almost a
minute ahead of DSD's Maria
McCambridge, followed by
Valerie McGovern of Donore
Harriers.
Our Mens Junior team (Lutfi
Dridi, Liam O'Halloran,
Tomás Kilbride, Kevin Fennell,
Kip Daniels and James Egan) as
well as Conor Healy (running
independently) ran well also
with Lutfi, Liam and Kip
coming in 14, 15 and 16th
respectively. *NOTE:
there was a mix-up at the AAI
about positions for Kip and
Conor. Kip was
16th and Conor 52nd.
Had this been corrected at the
time Clonliffe would have been
4th team. Somehow Kip
was down as 'Daniel Kidd' too!
The Junior Women's race
provided Clonliffe with their
first success of the day as a
team of Nicola Fallon in 5th,
Christine Kennelly in 8th,
Francis Nic Rianoin in 17th
and Ciara Meehan in 35th
secured team bronze medals.
It's the first set of Cross
Country medals at this level
that Clonliffe has picked up
so well done to all four girls
and keep up the good work.
