Albie Thomas back in Santry

Jul 11, 2008 [Stephen Byrne]
Clonliffe Harriers were honoured to welcome Albie Thomas back to Morton Stadium in Santry on the anniversary of his 3 mile world record in the Clonliffe Harriers/Crusaders Invitational on July 9th 1958. Albie arrived in Santry with his wife Nola and Ronnie Delaney for a night of nostalgia as our MC on the night Pat Bonass eloquently described the event.

The Dublin County Board were hosting an athletic event that evening and kindly held up a race so that Albie suitable attired in his singlet and bearing his original race number completed a lap of the track. Albie took the applause from athletes and spectators as he made his way around the track.

Albie and Ireland’s 1956 1500 metre champion Ronnie Delany were invited to unveil the 1958 wall in the clubhouse. This wall close to Brian Brewer’s mural featured photographs from both that 1 and 2 Mile records as well as other memorabilia from that magnificent Meet. - MORE....

ANOTHER GOOD SHOW FROM THE JUVENILES

Jun 29, 2008 [Noel Guiden]
Between the heavy rain showers the club`s juvenile athletes put together a number of super performances on home turf in the Morton Stadium in this morning`s final round of the Dublin Juvenile League. Once again the club provided the bulk of the athletes for the meet with a great turn out particularily from some of the newer recruits. It must be said however that the level of support for the distance events in the boys and girls from U/14 upwards is to say the least worrying : in the boys U/14 there were 4 starters, in the U/15 there was 1 and in the U/16 there were 2. A problem which demands urgent addressing. - MORE....

Brian McMahon also ran a season`s best over the same distance clocking 14:59.75. In the 800m Conor Healy was 4th in his race in a time of 1:52.63. Also in action at this meet were Gary O`Hanlon 3:52 for 10th place and Aidan Bailey 15th in 3:55.36 in the 1500m. - MORE....

Dunshaughlin 10k

Jun 28, 2008 [Jeremy Walsh]
Well I'm glad now that I didn't go to Boyzone, as there was a cracking race at Dunshaughlin tonight. Gebresailaisse v Tergat 2000 had nothing on this. It was great to see Mark Keneally back racing again. From the gun, himself and Vinny Mulvey from Raheny were immediately to the fore. At 2k they were neck and neck, a good distance ahead of the chasing pack. After that they were out of sight, but the race commentator kept us informed. Through 3miles in 14.15 they were setting a hot pace. Mark pulled away and built a lead, but Vinny kept plugging away, eventually getting back up with Mark at 9k. Mark said afterwards that he had been daydreaming and had to make a double take when Vinny drew up to his shoulder again. So both men put the foot down and a ding-dong battle ensued. With 150m to go Vinny pulled ahead. It looked like it was all over, but Mark made one last burst and was rewarded for his effort as he pulled clear to win in 29.45. A great test on his comeback, passed with flying colours. Well done, Mark. - MORE....

WEEKEND ROUND UP

Jun 22, 2008 [Noel Guiden]
It was a fairly quite weekend for Clonliffe athletes in comparison with previous weekends. David Donegan was in action in the international arena placing 6th in the pole vault in the European Cup in Estonia today as the Irish Team finished 3rd overall (full details on www.athleticsireland.ie). At last night`s IMC meet in Irishtown the only Clonliffe athlete racing was Eoin Pearce in the "B" 800 where he narrowly missed out on breaking 2 minutes recording a time of 2:00.9. In the Raheny "mid Summer 5k" held this morning in mid Winter weather, Terry McLaughlin was 19th in 18:17, Paul Carolan 30th in 19:09 and Terry Mee 84th in 23:32.

Pat Healy takes McCarrick Plate

Jun 21, 2008 [Stephen Byrne]
The 25th running of the McCarrick 2 ½ mile race took place in the beautiful surroundings of Malahide Castle on Thursday 19th June. The conditions could only be described as testing and in places very soft under foot. Unlike previous years our summer weather deserted us. At 7.30pm the warm up 2.5 mile lap took place in sheeting rain, thankfully the rain ceased in time for the start of the race. Thirty three runners toed the line for the race including new yellow jersey holder Maurice McCrohan fresh from the Lisburn half marathon the previous day. Former yellow jersey holder Noel Cullen and ever present at the top of the leader-board Eddie Harrison were also in the field.

The race is run on a staggered start basis with the athletes starting at predetermined intervals from a start time of 8PM. If the handicapper Jeremy Walsh gets the handicapping right the field should all be coming down the finish line in quick succession.

The race started with Dave Brady at 2 minutes past 8 with scratch runners Noel Cullen and Declan Power going off a further 4 minutes 30 seconds behind him. Excellent runs from David Dunwoody and Colm Groome seeing them start from 5.05 and 5.40 respectivly and claw there way up to 5th and 8th positions. - MORE....

With 11 event wins today, Clonliffe Harriers collected 127 points in today's second round of the EBS League. Winners included Jeremy Lyons in the 110m hurdles and 400m hurdles (53.89), John Laffey 400m (48.13), Brian MacMahon (4.00.39), Kevin English in the Steeplechase (10.08) and walk, Luke Mangan in the shot putt and discus, the 4x100m and 4x400m Relays. Other notable performances came from Eoin McDonnell with 2nd in the 800m, David Fitzmaurice with a 2nd in the 5000m and Mario Matuzzi matching them in the triple jump. Weekend Round Up Part 1

Jun 15, 2008 [Killian Lonergan]
The Club's middle distance athletes once again made the journey to this weekend's BMC races, this time in Watford, with high hopes of fast times and good performances. Conor Healy won his 800m in a time of 1.53.17. In an eventful race, Conor showed his potential over the hurdles as he delicately made his way over a fallen runner on lap two to pull away from the field for the win. James Nolan fought well in his 1500m to return with a time of 3.40.3 as he finished in 3rd place. Colm Rooney didn't managed to overcome some pre-race disruptions and seeding issues as he managed a 3.50.23 in his race. Next fastest for Clonliffe was Gary O'Hanlon with a time of 3.51.22. Agonisingly, this was 1/100th of a second outside Gary's personal best time. In this first 1500m of the season, it's certainly a positive opener. Aidan Bailey wasn't so lucky as he too had to deal with some gymnastic style running in his heat. Unfortunately Aidan ended up falling to the track, getting up, but running the majority of the race a la Brian Whittle ( with one shoe! ). David Flynn ran a big new personal best in the 3000m Steeplechase. His time of 9.17.83 shows his potential in this event and he'll look to lower this time again througout the season. - MORE....

Pat Devitt takes Round 5 Clonliffe Grand Prix

Jun 6, 2008 [Stephen Byrne]
Round 5 of the Clonliffe Grand Prix took place in Morton Stadium last night Thursday 5th June. As planned!!!! the heavy rain that had persisted over the previous 48 hours stopped a number of hours before the race was due to start. Although the track was slippery under foot the conditions could not have been much better. The gale that normally meets you down the home straight was non existent so personal bests were had by all.

The yellow jersey holder Noel Cullen had a day off giving the opportunity for his rivals to eat into his lead.

31 athletes toed the line for the Dave Brennan sponsored 3 mile track ‘wine’ race. The course was expertly measured by Maurice Ahern to make sure we kept to the correct distance. The race sponsor unfortunately could not take part due to injury. - MORE....

CLUB 800m TO BE A SCORCHER

Jun 3, 2008 [Noel Guiden]
Clonliffe`s club track and field C`ships take place on Sunday evening June 8th for Juveniles, Seniors and Masters. The action gets underway at 4.00pm with the tiny tots race, followed by the Juvenile programme with the senior and masters kicking in at 5.00pm. The highlight of the day may once again prove to be the men`s 800m. Who could forget last years wonderful race which yielded no less than three PB`s (Conor Healy, Eoin McDonnell and Stephen Harkness) in a race won by Colm Rooney in 1.50.9. Club Captain Joe Cooper expects Rooney and Healy to be joined on the start line by James Nolan, running his first Clonliffe Club C`ship. These three of course had a great battle in Santry only last week over the same distance with Nolan just holding off Rooney and the fast finishing Healy. What odds, however, on one of the younger crop upsetting the form book..... - MORE....
