JUVENILES HIT THE GROUND RUNNING IN NEWBRIDGE HOUSE

Sep 27, 2009 [Noel Guiden]
With the first few weeks training under their belts a large group of young Harriers headed to Newbridge House Demesne for this morning`s Dublin Juvenile Cross Country League. This was the first race of the season for most of this group in the U/10 to U/16 ages and made a welcome break from the slog of base work training. In keeping with the tradition of cross country of late the athletes were greeted with a bright, sunny, warm morning (temperatures of 16 C in late September!) and the usual excellent underfoot conditions of Newbridge House Demesne, lush grass on the parklands with little or no up hill. - MORE....

FINTAN SELECTED FOR SCHOOLS INTERNATIONAL

Sep 26, 2009 [Noel Guiden]
As a result of his fine 3rd place in the Leinster Schools Inter Boys Mountain Running Championship on Wednesday last (Sept 23rd) Clonliffe`s Fintan Doherty has been selected to run on the Irish School`s team for next weekend`s Celtic School`s Mountain race which takes place in Essex. Over a tough course measuring 4.6 km with a climb of 173m Fintan running for Castleknock College ran a strong race from the off leading the pack at half way, however, disaster almost struck at this point. Still suffering the after effects of a heavy cold Fintan had a speed wobble and found himself lying dazed in a bush as his rivals past him by. Deciding he`d better finish what he started he quickly dusted himself off and set off in hot pursuit. His reward: Third place in Leinster (in 18.15) and his first International. Excellent stuff. - MORE....

Bonass bags the Horan Cup

Sep 21, 2009 [Stephen Byrne]
The Grand Prix Winter Series took to the grass a little earlier than usual last Saturday September 19th due to the upgrading of the track in Morton Stadium. Unlike last year's everglades conditions in Santry Demesne this year the participating athletes and officials were treated to excellent conditions with bright sunshine and excellent underfoot conditions, added to that a taxing 2K course with undulating hills that got harder as the laps ticked on. - MORE....

Brunton wins Santry 2 mile, O'Rourke takes the points

Sep 11, 2009 [Stephen Byrne]
The Grand Prix Winter Series proper kicked off in Indian Summer conditions in Santry yesterday evening. In bright sunshine with little or no wind 38 athletes toed the line at Gulliver Retail Park for this new 2 mile event finishing with a lap in Santry Demesne Park. With Jeremy and Philip absent from the race the question was who could give Nigel Brunton a run in the race. At the halfway stage Ernie Ramsey was in close contact but faded in the second part of the race to finish 15 seconds in arrears. Ian Guiden's bet of finishing 2 minutes ahead of his old man proved a little misguided with only a margin of 1.31 to play with. With a deceivingly tough up hill finish Maurice McCrohan was pipped on the line by a fast moving Paul Carolan. Fine performances were had by Eddie Harrison and new 0/65 silver medalist in the National Half Marathon last weekend Pat Bonass to name a few.

CIAN HOME FOR BRONZE

Sep 6, 2009 [Noel Guiden]
Making it a worthwhile trip home to Ireland this weekend was Cian McLoughlin for the National Half Marathon, an event in which Cian now has a full set of medals, having won the title in 2003 and finished second in 2006. Today over a pretty testing course in Ballybofey, County Donegal (how could any course in Donegal be anything but testing !) Cian placed third in a time of 67:27 behind St. Malachy`s pair Joe McAlister (65.50) and Gary Murray (66.36). New persoanl best times were set by both Michael MacDiarmada and Declan Power. Michael finished 13th in a time of 71.23 while Declan crossed the line in 73.35 to claim not only a new PB but also O/35 National bronze. Super Master Pat Bonass won National silver in the O/65 class in 94:16 to add to his 5,000 Gold won in Tullamore three weeks back. Well done to all. - MORE....

Flynner(WSC athletes of the week) gets off to positive start for Western State

Sep 7, 2009 [N. Guiden ] - (Updated Sep 8, 2009)
David Flynn got his collegiate career off to a very good start over the weekend in the colours of his college Western State College of Colorado at the Joe I Vigil Invitational yesterday September 6th. This was an 8k race held at an altitude of 7,500 feet, the open men’s Invitational race was ran over 8k and featured a top class field of athletes, collegiate and non collegiate. For tactical reasons Flynner ran unattached, however, finished fourth of the Western State College runners in 21st place in a time of 26:16, a very impressive run particularly taking into account the altitude. Flynner interestingly enough finished second freshman home. Flynner, as regular visitors to this website will be aware, has been settling in nicely to his new surroundings in Colorado and a performance of this nature at this early stage in the season is a great confidence booster. Post race he was clearly very satisfied with his run commenting that he had ‘ran a great race against a top class field’ and that he was particularly pleased with his speed taking into account the 7,500 ft altitude. - MORE....
